    Open the video and copy its URL from the address bar, or use Share → Copy link in the YouTube app. Short youtu.be links, links with a timestamp and embed links work too.

Each entry shows the codec and an estimated file size, so converting YouTube to MP4 comes down to picking the row that suits your screen and your storage and clicking Download.

Compatibility is the reason people ask for MP4, and it is the reason Y-Download prefers H.264 video with AAC audio for everything up to 1080p. 360p and 480p – small files for slow connections

A 10-minute video usually comes in well under 100 MB at these sizes. Fine for a phone screen, for sending in a chat app, or when you are on a limited data plan. Both are H.264 and play on anything.

720p – the sweet spot for phones and tablets

720p HD looks sharp on any phone or tablet and on smaller laptop screens, at roughly half the size of 1080p. If you are unsure, start here. On a 6-inch display most people cannot tell it apart from Full HD.

1080p – Full HD for TVs and monitors

Full HD is the highest resolution YouTube encodes in H.264, which makes 1080p MP4 the strongest combination of quality and compatibility. A 10-minute 1080p60 file is usually 250–300 MB; at 30 fps it is smaller. This is the file to put on a USB stick for your TV or drop into a video editor.

1440p and 4K – VP9 or AV1 inside the MP4

Is the MP4 the same quality as the video on YouTube?

Yes. We do not re-encode the picture. YouTube already stores the video at each resolution as a finished stream; Y-Download downloads the stream you chose plus the best audio and puts them in an MP4 container. What you save is exactly what YouTube would play at that setting, including 60 fps when the upload has it.

Will the MP4 play on my TV, iPhone or older laptop?

Files up to 1080p use H.264 video and AAC audio, the most widely supported combination there is. They play on smart TVs from a USB drive, in QuickTime and Windows Media Player, on iPhone and Android and in every editing program. Only 1440p and 4K files use VP9 or AV1, which need a recent player such as VLC, Chrome or a 2020+ TV.

How large is a 1080p YouTube video as MP4?

It depends on length, frame rate and how much motion the video has. As a guide, 10 minutes of 1080p at 60 fps is around 250–300 MB, and 30 fps material is smaller. Y-Download shows an estimated size next to every resolution before you download, so there are no surprises. The largest file we produce is 4 GB, and videos up to 4 hours long are supported.

Can I download YouTube videos in 1080p on my phone?

Yes. Open Y-Download in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android, paste the link and tap the 1080p row. iPhone saves the MP4 to the Files app under Downloads; Android saves it to the Downloads folder, where your gallery app will find it. On Android you can also install Y-Download as an app and share videos to it directly from YouTube.

Can I paste youtu.be links, timestamps or embed links?

Yes. Standard youtube.com/watch links, short youtu.be links, links copied with a timestamp and embed URLs are all recognized, as are Shorts and YouTube Music links. Whether you think of it as YouTube to MP4 or YT to MP4, the process is the same: paste, wait a moment, choose a quality. Private, members-only and age-restricted videos cannot be downloaded, and live streams are available only after they end and YouTube finishes processing them.

Can I download only the audio instead of the MP4?

Yes. The same result card has an Audio tab with MP3 at 320 or 128 kbps, the original M4A or OPUS stream, and WAV or FLAC. If you want the video with sound, stay on the Video tab – every MP4 already includes the best available audio track.

Is it legal to download YouTube videos as MP4?

Only for content you have the right to keep: videos you uploaded yourself, videos released under a permissive license such as Creative Commons, or videos whose creator has given you permission. Saving copyrighted material without permission can breach YouTube's terms of service and copyright law in your country. Y-Download is a tool; how you use the files is your responsibility.
