YouTube encodes resolutions above 1080p only in the newer VP9 and AV1 codecs. We keep the original stream so quality is untouched; modern phones, computers and players such as VLC play these files without problems.
The file is encoded at a constant 320 kbps from YouTube's best available audio stream, which is typically 128–160 kbps AAC or Opus. 320 kbps preserves that source as faithfully as MP3 can; if you want the untouched original, download M4A or OPUS instead.
Fetching video details takes about two seconds. Preparing a typical MP3 takes 5–15 seconds; a long 1080p video can take a minute or two because video and audio have to be merged. You see live progress the whole time.
